Maintaining Your Submersible Sump Pump

Chances are, if you have a sump pump, you live in area where water damage is a major concern.

So it makes sense to keep your sump pump in working order to avoid any water damage to your personal property.

Sump pumps are prone to a variety of very common problems that are easy to diagnose and fix on your own.

Here are a few tips for diagnosing and fixing common sump pump problems:

  • Check the power: If you’re relying on a plug-in sump pump and power outages seem to coincide with your drainage problems, you might want to consider switching to a sump pump that runs on battery power or at least has a backup battery.
  • Clean it out: Sump pumps will accumulate all sorts of gravel, dirt, and debris which will decrease their performance, so be sure to check yours periodically to ensure that it functions properly.
  • Check screens and openings: Sometimes these can be clogged, too, making it difficult for the sump pump to move water.
  • Remove compressed air: Compressed air can easily become trapped near the check valve, impairing the sump pump’s effectiveness or rendering it completely useless. This problem is especially common in sump pumps with a solid pipe leading to the check valve.
  • Check the switch float: Always check to make sure that the switch float inside the sump pump is floating freely and not stuck. If the switch float gets stuck, the sump pump won’t be able to detect the rising water level.

And if you encounter a problem with your submersible sump pump that you can’t diagnose or fix, be sure to contact an experienced contractor or company to handle your sump pump problems.

Luckily for us, we called ASAP Waterproofing…

“Growing up my husband and I never had a sump pump, so we didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into.  We had no idea that if we didn’t maintain it, it could flood our basement.

After we had a huge snowstorm and it all started to melt, I was startled when I walked downstairs and stepped into 3 feet of water.  Later, I was told that it was probably because we didn’t relieve the sump pump when the power was out for a long time.

Luckily for us, we called ASAP Waterproofing and they came out and repaired the damage and told us what we needed to do to prevent this from happening again.”
